PRAYER OF THE MONTH

During the summer months, many may have vacationed and travelled to other countries—to work, relax, and see something new. The countries’ political systems may vary: republic, monarchy, even dictatorship. However, as travelers we often repeat the request in the Lord's Prayer, “thy Kingdom come,” —not to visit one kingdom, but for it to come to us.

First of all, this is not a kingdom in the usual sense. This word does not describe either territory or form of government. What is it? In the icons, Jesus' head or entire body is metaphorically surrounded by a halo—a certain space or field permeated by his divinity. We could say that this is his kingdom, coming with him.

It comes there and then, when we let it in. Therefore, we pray, “Thy kingdom come.” And it comes where it “manifests itself,” where it prevails: to love, to put others first, to strive to be like children, to do good without expecting reward, to trust in our heavenly Father...

Let us therefore, boldly pray: "Thy kingdom come: tonight, when I hug my children after prayer; tomorrow at 9 a.m., when I have to make and respect decisions at work; next Saturday, when I visit my parents who are waiting for me; every day when I open my doors in hospitality to  visiting travelers and friends..."
